In an effort to use natural resources responsibly, Duravit manufactures a
ceramic aggregate comprising natural raw materials of clay, kaolin, quartz,
and feldspar. Quartz and feldspar meet again for the glaze, along with chalk
and the mineral stone dolomite. Each product receives individual attention,
from the initial mixing of materials, to shaping them into a mold, to glazing
them before firing in a kiln—just as any artisan would do when creating an
elegant vase or a chic coffee mug. The final quality inspection and branding
of a product with the Duravit logo (a stylized version of the Black Forest’s
rarest bird, the endangered wood grouse) also happen at the hands of
a skilled craftsperson. “Even though we are living in an era of technology
and automation, when it comes to products with such a steadfast
commitment to design and function, quality still largely depends on human
skill,” Schroeder says. “Duravit maintains a great deal of craftsmanship to
ensure this high standard, and that applies to the manufacturing of ceramic,
as well as all of our other production areas.”
