With Canada’s recent ruling to legalize recreational marijuana and
an increasing number of U.S. states passing legislation with regard to
medicinal cannabis, the need for well-designed dispensaries that take
into account everything from client privacy and comfort to safety,
security, and sales appeal is set to explode. It’s a new retail realm
and one where careful and creative design will play a crucial role.
The next issue of i+D will investigate retail design of all kinds, with
a targeted look at the burgeoning business of designing perfectly
planned spaces for the legal sale of marijuana.
Located in Tampa, Florida, Surterra Wellness
holds one of only a handful of medical
marijuana licenses in the state. The company
turned to Toronto-based figure3 to create a
space suited to the mindset of a new kind of
shopper. The resultant design intends not only
to spark curiosity, but to redefine the category
in the process.
